Prolonged heavy rain caused only one of the four quarterfinals of the men’s and women’s singles to be completed on March 29. After Jannik Sinner beat Emil Ruusuvuori 6-3, 6-1, no match took place. At 21:00, local time, the organizers announced that the evening match was canceled due to adverse weather.
The stadium in Miami has no roof, causing many matches to be postponed because of rain over the past three days. On March 28, Daniil Medvedev and Quentin Halys had to go to the fourth round at 0:30 local time, to keep up with the tournament schedule. That match ended at 2 o’clock, when Medvedev won 6-4, 6-2.
According to the new schedule of the organizers, Medvedev will play the earliest match on the central court on today’s match, at 13:00 local time, ie 0h on March 31, Hanoi time. The Russian tennis player will meet Christopher Eubanks – who went straight from qualifying to the quarterfinals. The remaining quarter-final meetings between Francesco Cerundolo and Karen Khachanov, Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz are scheduled to take place at 2am and 6am Hanoi time, respectively.
Sinner, the first to reach the semi-finals, will have the advantage of a day off before playing Alcaraz or Fritz. At Indian Wells two weeks ago, Sinner lost to Alcaraz in two sets. But with high performance in Miami, the Italian tennis player is considered a bright champion candidate.
The defending champion of the Miami Open, Alcaraz has won 17 of the last 18 matches. In the last nine bouts, he hasn’t lost a set. Alcaraz needs to extend the winning streak by at least three more games, to defend the title and keep the world number one spot after the tournament.
In the women’s singles, three of the four semi-final tickets have already been sold. In the fourth round of the strongest tennis players, Indian Wells 2023 champion Elena Rybakina faced Jessica Pegula, while Sorana Cirstea waited to meet the winner in the match between Petra Kvitova and Ekaterina Alexandrova. Cirstea has just shocked when she defeated second seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinals of WTA 1000 for the first time in 10 years.
